Situation of air freight transport in Spain

During the first 6 months of the year, air transport of merchandise has grown 13% of the volume of air cargo compared to the previous year. Although during the month of August there was a slowdown in growth (only + 2.6% compared to 2017), the total accumulated from January to August remained at + 11.5% over the previous year.

If we look at the air traffic for each airport, that of Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas stays in the first position and with difference: on average 42 million goods transported. Second and third place are Barcelona and Zaragoza, with 13.8 and 12.8 million merchandise, respectively.

During the year the main airports increase the volume of merchandise transported compared to 2017, but in August airports in Zaragoza, Vitoria and Tenerife North, among others, reduce their air traffic.

Although air freight transport is a minority compared to maritime and land transport services, it continues to grow year after year. One of the causes of this growth is the increase in purchases over the internet: there are more and more people who buy products at a great distance and require them as soon as possible. There are also a greater number of stores without their own warehouse, which sell anywhere in the world and with very limited waiting times. These trends in sales and consumption are driving the use of air transport to goods and is expected to continue increasing in the coming years.
